piazza

An open square or public place in a city or town, esp. in Italy. pier A vertical supporting structure, as a section of wall between two openings or one supporting the end of an arch or lintel. Also, a cast-in-place concrete foundation formed by boring with a large auger or excavating by hand a shaft in the earth to a suitable bearing stratum and filling the shaft with concrete.
